The Couple

The wife’s empty suitcase
stood by the front door
a warning
as if at any moment it could fill
and she would run
again.
The husband’s desk
was cluttered with papers
and bills. Saved on his computer
under internet favorites
were places: the Caribbean, Puerto Rico,
Cancun.
The places he would go
if he ever found the courage
to leave.
