Relationships Aren’t Fairy Tales, But Damn They’re Still Beautiful

couple looking seriously into one another's eyes

‘Love is a fairy tale.’ How many times have you heard that line? How many stories have you read, movies have you seen where love is this grand and perfect bond where two people never fight, where the glass slipper fits, where everything ends up happily ever after?

Yeah right.

Love is waking up in the middle of the night and poking your man until he wakes up, just to ask him the dumb question that’s on your mind. It’s stealing all the covers from her; it’s putting your ice-cold toes on him. Love is writing messages with lipstick on the bathroom mirror, or leaving the seat up just because you know it will drive her crazy. Its forehead kisses, annoying him on purpose, and teasing her when her hairs a mess because she’s not only your girlfriend, she’s your best friend and you get to mess with her for the rest of your life.

Love is learning how to do things together, like cooking, or vacuuming, cleaning the shower on your hands on knees. It’s failing and falling down, but being okay with that because you have each other to push you through (and give you crap, of course).

Love is arguing about dumb things like the weather, or what pants you should wear for a dinner date. It’s laughing and making silly inside jokes and watching movies in your underwear.

Love is all the chaos, the frustration, the imperfect perfection of loving someone who’s just as weird as you.

It’s finding reasons to pick each other. It’s making up with forehead kisses after a fight. It’s going through the impossibly hard stuff together, and somehow making light of it because life is a hell of a lot easier when you have someone to lean on.

Love is finding out that life doesn’t always (or really ever, for that matter) go according to your plan, but the fact that you have someone to love means more than the crap you’re fighting through.

Love is going to the doctor together, bringing her soup when she’s sick, teaching him how to match his socks with the rest of his outfit when he’s absolutely clueless. It’s dancing in the kitchen, or sitting at the table eating takeout and not saying anything at all.

It’s all the little moments, the big moments, the moments in-between.

When you truly love someone, it’s not a fairy tale. It’s not the ‘answer’ you’ve been searching for, or the missing piece in the gigantic puzzle of your life. It’s not princesses and prince charmings. It’s not spells and glass slippers. It’s not wishes granted and dreams coming true.

Love isn’t a fairy tale, it’s a complicated, messy, perfectly-imperfect story you write day by day.

And no, that might not be the happily-ever-after we imagined—but it’s beautiful. It’s real. And it’s so worth it.
