I Hope You Know That I Appreciate You

two girls sitting at the table talking

I know I don’t say it enough, but your voice has always sounded like home to me. I love the way I can hear you speak through the receiver and am brought back to mornings sitting on the couch, a cup of hot chocolate in my lap, or the crisp sound of fall leaves crunching beneath our boots and both of us laughing and telling stories of the little things we missed. There’s a comfort in the way you talk, way you say my name, way you bring me back to who I am, who I’ve always been.

I love you for that, how you’ve been consistent, never wavering in a world that’s too afraid to stay.

I love the way you keep me grounded, even when I want to fly with fragile wings. I love how you never stop me from trying, even when you know the outcome, even when you want so desperately to step in and save. I love the way you’ve never chided me with an ‘I told you so,’ or made me bite my tongue, or made me stand before you timidly as if I owed you an apology. I love the way I never really had to be sorry, and yet you forgave me all the same.

I know I don’t say it enough, but I appreciate you. I find value in being someone you care about. I honor and respect the choices you make, even if I don’t speak those words aloud. You inspire me with the grace and poise you embody, with the way you carry yourself, with the person you are.

I know I don’t say it enough, but you’ve done so much for me and I’m thankful. Thankful to be here, to have you in my life, to be loved by you.

I love the way you listen, the way you laugh, the things you’ve taught me unconsciously that have carried me through my days. I love the way you’ve been a staple in my life, and not perfect, but someone I look up to regardless, for the way you acknowledge all your flaws and still rise in spite of them.

I love that you haven’t stayed the same person and that you’ve smiled alongside me as I grew, as I left, as I wandered, and fell down, and fell into people that weren’t right, and fell apart. I love that through all of those moments you were the glue both holding and putting me back together.

I love that you love me, no matter where or who I am.

I know I don’t say this enough, but you are beautiful. Beautiful inside and out. Beautiful because of the truths you carry. Beautiful because of your passion, and energy, and the light you share with everyone and everything you touch. Beautiful simply because you are you.

I appreciate you.
I love you.
I’m here.
