What I’m Reading This Week (5/4)

person reading a book, this week's reading list

Hellooooo! This is the weekly spot where I share content that’s interested, intrigued, or inspired me for this week’s reading list! From powerful feminist essays to poetry that pulls at my heartstrings, to articles on self-care and Instagram updates, here’s what resonated with me the most. Enjoy! (And feel free to comment below.)

1. This beautiful interview with Sandra Cisneros (whom I adore!!)

Sandra Cisneros is the author of “The House on Mango Street,” which I have created a ton of teacher education resources on, if you’re at all interested/in that line of work!

Here’s an excerpt from the interview that I loved:

“I know a poem’s a poem when I have to invent the language for it. It’s an emotion for me, the same way that a pebble would force you to stop and take it out of your shoe. It’s like that, you know. I feel unbalanced, discomfort, until I take the pebble out of my shoe.”

2. This empowering essay about women and wanting to be rich by Jessica Knoll (which is amazing, by the way).

Memorable Excerpts:

“Ever since I was a little girl, my fairy tale ending involved a pantsuit, not a wedding dress. Success meant doing something well enough to secure independence. My something was my writing.”

“If she can see it, she can be it. I want to be it for little girls whose parents aren’t saving for their educations, whose friends make fun of them for wanting too much from their lives. I want to make the kind of money that allows me to jet to Mexico on a Tuesday, to meaningfully contribute to nasty politicians, to afford a shark of a lawyer if any man ever lays a finger on me again.”

Want to learn more about Jessica’s story? Here’s her story.

3. This article about the Instagram updates because did you know new changes are happening? (I didn’t.)

Update 1, (Stories): “From a sticker of your new favorite song on Spotify to action shots from GoPro, it’s now easy to share what you’re up to or how you’re feeling by posting directly to Instagram Stories from other apps.”

Update 2, (Camera Effects): “Face filters, text styles and stickers help turn casual moments into experiences you can’t wait to share. Now we’re unlocking the ability for third parties to design unique, interactive camera experiences for their followers.”

Update 3, (Video Chat): “In the coming weeks, we’ll bring video chat to Instagram and give friends a new way to spend time together — even when they aren’t actually together. To start a video chat, simply tap the new camera icon at the top of a Direct thread. You can chat one-on-one or with a small group — and you can keep the conversation going for as long as you like. You can also minimize the video and continue the chat while doing other things on Instagram.”

Update 4, (Explore): “Explore is still personalized for you, but the content is now organized into topic channels so you can browse across your interests and go deeper on any area you’d like.”

What?! Exciting.

4. This poignant poem on slavery, racism, and privilege by Irene Mathieu.

Excerpt:

“there were slaves in our family,
some related and some not.
money gotten by blood
tends to stay in the blood,
which has no race;
and race is what is run,
equals teams divvied up
according to birthplace and
legal degree of freedom.”

5. This list of spring cleaning tips.

Because honestly, I don’t know how to properly wash a window. (Anyone else always get the streaks!? Just me?!)

6. This article on ‘clean sleeping.’

Have you heard of this? I’m not sure whether it’s really a ‘buzz’ term, but I stumbled across this article in a newsletter and felt like God was forcing me to read it and slow down (because my sleeping habits…well…let’s just say they could be improved. Here’s an excerpt from the piece:

“Copper pillows, foot massages, ‘psychic sleep’ routines and no lights in your bedroom (not even an iPhone screen). These are some of the rules behind the latest trend in nocturnal wellness: Clean sleeping.”

7. This article on qualities of strong female leaders by Andrea Heuston.

So much yes in one place.
