Another Voice On the ‘Netflix and Chill’ Culture

girl sharing a video

I came across a post today by a UNC freshman who had stumbled across my article on Thought Catalog, I Am Not A Netflix-and-Chill Kind of Girl and felt compelled to make a vlog (video blog) about how it resonated with her and her college experience.

I’m floored. Honestly. And I’m humbled. It’s incredible to me that writing can reach so many different people in so many different places. And how words can relate so deeply with people we’ve never even met.

In her YouTube video, this nineteen-year-old girl talks openly about her college experience, the experiences of the people around her, and the world of women in general. Her most powerful words:

Girls realize, please please realize that you’re worth so much more than ‘Netflix-and-chill’.

When I wrote the article, originally published on my Twenty Somethings blog, I never thought that it would become so big. I wrote honestly, candidly, and expressed my inner desires to be a relationship girl, a girl that dated, a girl that did things rather than participated in this new turn of the dating lifestyle, this ‘let’s-hangout-and-watch-tv-and-makeout’ type of “relationship”.

I wrote strongly. I was passionate.

My thoughts were never meant to be an insult to anyone. In fact, they were the opposite. I wanted to share something that felt close to my heart. I wanted to write about what I truly wanted: I want the kind of relationship that challenges me, helps me grow, and makes me a better person, as I encourage all of those things in my significant other.

I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with that.

There have been plenty of people who have completely hated on my thoughts…it’s been tough, I’m not going to lie. But the positive comments and the connections I’ve made with people around the world have been a blessing. I’ve grown as a person. And I’m excited to continue to write openly and celebrate these connections with others.

A huge shout out to Adri, and her wonderful and positive blog, Ballet. Beauty. Bless. It’s nice to e-meet you and thank you for your vlog and support! 🙂
