You don’t know me
but your laugh is a melody
I recognize.
My heart is a lump in my throat—
like a singing sparrow—chest full,
gasping for breath at the sound
of your name.
We are but shifting bones and skin,
wandering eyes, afraid.
Yearning to hold on
while simultaneously conditioned
to let go.
Across the crowded space
your gaze finds solace
in me. And I intake my breath
slowly, carefully.
I have always been one to believe
in chances,
fleeting moments.
But this is not ‘love at first sight’—
this is meeting a stranger’s gaze
and recognizing
home.
