There’s something about music festivals that have always tugged at my heartstrings. I love the sound, the rush. I love the way the crowd swells and seems to ebb and flow all around you. I love the way the moment transforms—an energy so beautiful and palpable you can feel it on your skin.
There’s so much beauty in music, in all forms. But there are misconceptions sometimes, too. I’ve always loved EDM (electronic dance music), but that comes, unfortunately with judgment.
Here are the struggles of being a totally normal person who loves EDM:
Everyone thinks you’re a crazy *rave* girl/guy
Which, I guess, isn’t the worst thing in the world. Every music genre faces this. If you like punk rock, you’re emo. If you only listen to country, you’re a hick. The list goes on. But no, just because I love this music doesn’t mean I wear sparkly bras on the daily. I—like anyone else who loves music—am a normal person.
Everyone thinks you do drugs all the time
Again, isn’t this belief typical of every music style? Rockers are known for hard drugs; country music fans are considered binge-drinkers. There are stereotypes about everything. Are there EDM fans who do lots of drugs? Sure. Are drugs a part of the EDM culture? Uh-huh. But can you appreciate the genre without molly-popping 24-7? Absolutely.
People judge who you are as a person
Oftentimes because they won’t take the time to know for themselves. I’ve seen this countless times at music festivals and concerts, and honestly, it breaks my heart. Once, I attended a festival in Miami where a self-proclaimed Christian woman was screaming at fans as they entered through the gates. “God will punish you!” I remember, in that moment, being so damn angry. As a Christian myself, I didn’t understand why her heart was filled with such bitterness and judgment.
We have to know people, love people for who they are—not pass judgments on what we think or perceive about them. We have to understand that you can be a totally normal person who loves EDM. A music genre doesn’t define you.

I’m going to my first one in July (hopefully) and it is technically a week because there are 2 back to back. If I can’t make it to that one I am definitely going to Lollapalooza. I am super excited but at the same time so skeptical because I am such a clean freak. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be bringing TONS of baby wipes!
It’s so much fun! But if you’re a clean freak….you definitely need to take it easy :):) haha but no you’ll have a great time!
SOOOOO true!
Isn’t it!? Haha!
