The Snake

The snake
reminded her of smooth grass
between gravel rocks where she stubbed her toe
blood oozing like hot syrup.
The grass had always fascinated her–
gentle blades among jagged stones.
The snake was like this–cunning,
resilient, out of place. Skin slick
but strangely warm.
