5 Reminders For When You Feel Like Giving Up

written by Karla Crisostomo
happy woman who didn't give up

Everyone has life goals, but not everyone dares to reach them. The ones who cease climbing the mountain of their ambitions definitely started with goals, but as struggles became higher and harder, they may have given up. It happens to all of us. Sometimes you feel as if you’ve exhausted all your energy and don’t want to continue. But in those moments when you feel like giving up, just say the following things to yourself:

1. I wouldn’t have started if I knew this wasn’t worth it.

It may sound so cliché but it’s true. Why would you even take the first steps if you didn’t really find your goal significant? Remember why you started. Remember every purpose you knew this goal could have. Remember how it will make you happy—and complete.

2. The finish line may just be a few inches away.

People often feel the urge to give up when they are almost at the finish line. Imagine how much of a waste this would be! Wasted effort. Wasted time. Wasted emotions. Wasted wisdom. Don’t ever waste these things. It could be difficult to get them back and to just regret it. Always think that you’re almost there and you will refuel your fire.

3. This is not just about me.

One effective point of motivation is when you remind yourself that your pursuit isn’t really just for you. You wouldn’t want to be an author if you didn’t want to inspire other people with your stories or poetry. You wouldn’t want to be a great artist if you didn’t want to open their eyes to see the invisible truths through your art. You wouldn’t want to shed those pounds if you didn’t want a quality life with your loved ones.

Remind yourself that it’s not only for you but for others as well.

4. I am tested because I have the power.

Sound familiar? Yes! You can compare it with Uncle Ben’s words to Peter: with great power, comes great responsibility. Now, at your moment of pursuit, you are tested to see if you can achieve your goals because you have the strength, the determination, the ability. You have to use them. You have to believe that you are gifted with the power to accomplish things. Nobody has ever tested a car without an engine.

5. I choose happiness.

The very reason why you aim at a goal is that it’s simply your happiness. You know it adds joy to your life when you accomplish it. Life is too short to deprive it of happiness and there have been enough roots of sadness around. So you better intend to feed your life with the purest joys. Big or small, joy makes one’s life well-lived, and joy comes from every fulfillment.

You see, when adversity dissuades you from reaching your dreams, it actuallymakes your pursuit more worthwhile.

You will learn a lot and your emotional and mental muscles will gain more power if you choose to keep the fight. Nobody can ever say something’s not for them because the truth is, it merely depends on their determination. So when you feel like giving up lurks around, just help yourself and remember these five affirmations.
