My faith has always been a deep part of who I am, of what centers me, of what guides my journey. When I first started writing, I was fascinated by people’s perspectives of faith, and how each individual’s identity is inextricably tied to what he or she believes.
At first, I was scared to share my faith journey, scared of putting my heart so vulnerably into the world. Once I did, though, it became such a beautiful opportunity — to both connect outwardly, and grow inwardly.
Writing (and sharing your writing) has the incredible ability to ground your faith. When you share truths about what you believe and open up about God’s promises, it floods light into the darkness. That’s how Jacqueline Ann’s debut poetry book, Water Lilies is.
I met Jacqueline by accident and we connected over our shared excitement of both poetry and faith. Her book has easily become one of my favorites — not only because our styles are so reminiscent, but because she writes with elegance and ease that reminds you of God’s unending love and encourages you in your walk.
Here are thirteen of my favorite poems from her collection that will center you, inspire you, and ground you in your faith.
For the one fighting battles within:
For the brokenhearted:
For the one who feels abandoned:
For the one who feels purposeless:
For the one longing for an answered prayer:
For the one in a difficult season:
For the one who needs encouragement:
For the one hoping for change:
For the one in need of renewal:
For the one who’s questioning:
For the one who’s desperate for a new start:
For the one who feels defeated:
For the one who needs to be reminded of his or her worth:
These are just a few of the poems from Jacqueline Ann’s Water Lilies, a book I’ve grown to love because of its strength, openness, emotion, and ability to capture the beautiful challenge of living in faith. It’s not always easy to share about what you believe, but Jacqueline does it with grace, elegance, and introspection that I admire.
