It’s Not That I’m Running Away

girl on beach it's not like I'm running away

You know me better than I know myself, I think.
What I need, who I am, why.
You read the words
from my heart
before they even cross my lips.
And somehow you understand my restlessness
for what it is—
a longing to be
other than where I am—
not an escape,
but because freedom
tastes sweeter
on someone else’s mouth.

And maybe I wasn’t meant
to be yours
to be anyone’s

at least for now.

See, it’s not that I’m running away,
I’m just finding
parts of what I’ve lost
in grains of sand
and ocean waves—
