Object Permanence

This ring, this silver circle is round like the mouth of a newborn and
round like the sun that rises and falls day after day
Consistency like the mailman or the urge to drink water
Present: the nagging voice of the mother who loves you
A smooth metal promise, a handprint in fresh cement
like the first kiss, still wet on your lips.
